Basic Hip Surgery Instrument Set

We know how confusing it can be when ordering new basic hip surgery instrument sets. Hospitals, surgical departments, and even individual orthopaedic consultants often have their own preferences when it comes to the specific tools they want available in theatre, which can make choosing the right set challenging. To help simplify this process, we have drawn on our experience to compile a recommended basic hip set that reflects the most commonly used instruments for foundational hip procedures, particularly hip replacement surgery.

This basic hip set is designed to support surgeons through the core phases of hip procedures, from initial incision and soft‑tissue handling to bone preparation and manipulation. It includes a robust DIN basket for organised sterilisation and transport, along with multiple scalpel handles in standard and long lengths to suit varied approaches. Precision cutting and dissection are supported by pairs of Mayo scissors and a dressing scissor, while Lane tissue forceps and Gillies dissecting forceps enable reliable tissue handling. Kocher artery forceps and additional curved haemostatic forceps help ensure dependable control of bleeding throughout the operation.

Exposure and access are facilitated by Langenbeck and Norfolk & Norwich retractors, while deeper dissection and bone work are assisted by tools such as the Bristow malar elevator, Macdonald dissector, and a straight bone curette. Orthopaedic‑specific instruments like a heath style mallet, Fergusson bone‑holding forceps, luer rongeur, Hohmann‑Muller spike bone elevators, and Trethowan bone levers provide controlled manipulation and leverage during implant preparation and positioning. Additional items like St Marks dissecting forceps, curved Kelly artery forceps, a hip dislocation hook, and a set of Swedish osteotomes (in 10 mm, 15 mm, and 30 mm widths) extend the set’s versatility for basic hip replacement tasks.

Each instrument in this set is selected for its balance of precision, durability, and ergonomic handling, helping surgical teams work confidently and efficiently. By bringing these essential tools together into one comprehensive tray, the basic hip surgery set provides a dependable foundation for consistent, safe, and effective hip procedures, whether used as a stand‑alone primary tray or to supplement more specialised orthopaedic sets.
