Open Shoulder Instruments Set
We know how confusing it can be when ordering new open shoulder instrument sets. Hospitals, orthopaedic teams, and even individual consultants often have very specific preferences for the instruments and tray configurations they use, especially in technically demanding procedures like shoulder surgery. To make this easier, we have drawn on our experience supplying orthopaedic theatres to compile an example set that includes the most commonly used and trusted tools for open shoulder operations, providing a reliable foundation that can be adapted to different surgeon requirements.
This open shoulder set is designed to support surgeons throughout the key stages of open shoulder surgery, from initial incision and soft tissue dissection through exposure and controlled manipulation. It typically includes essential cutting and dissecting instruments such as scalpel handles (No. 3, No. 4 and No. 7), Gillies and Lane dissecting forceps, and a variety of scissors (Mayo, McIndoe and utility) to facilitate precise soft tissue work. Haemostasis is supported by multiple artery forceps, including Cairns (Adsons) and Kocher types, while sponge holding forceps and towel clips help maintain a clear operative field.

To assist with deeper access and bone work, the set incorporates robust orthopaedic instruments such as Hohmann-Muller spike bone elevators, Trethowan and Lane bone levers, Mitchell rugine and Pennybacker elevators, and Capener osteotomes in multiple widths. Bone curettes (straight and curved) and rongeurs provide controlled bone removal, and specialised tools such as the Kocher bone hook and Hardinge introducer enhance manipulation and leverage when needed. Retractor options include single-ended Langenbeck blades and self-retaining Travers retractors, while a toffee hammer and solid Heath mallet support controlled instrument impact.
Each instrument in this set is selected for its balance of durability, precision, and ergonomic handling, helping surgical teams work confidently and efficiently during open shoulder procedures. By bringing these commonly used instruments together into a coherent, well-structured set, the open shoulder instrument tray provides surgeons with a dependable and versatile solution that supports safe, precise, and consistent surgical performance.
