SMR Instruments Set

We know how confusing it can be when ordering new SMR instrument sets. Hospitals, surgical departments, and even individual consultants often have very particular preferences when it comes to their instrument layouts, making it difficult to find a one‑size‑fits‑all solution. Drawing on our experience and close collaboration with ENT teams, we have put together a recommended set that reflects the most commonly used instruments for SMR (submucous resection) surgery.

This SMR set is carefully designed to support the full scope of septoplasty and turbinate reduction procedures. It includes dissecting forceps such as Gillies (1‑2 teeth) and McIndoe serrated forceps for secure tissue handling, alongside a range of elevators, including Howarth, Hill, and Freer, to help access and manipulate the nasal septum and surrounding structures. A No. 3 scalpel handle is included for precise incisions, while fine scissors (Mayo, McIndoe, and iris) give flexibility for different cutting needs.

To facilitate bone work and cartilage removal, the set also contains ethmoid punches (Tilley Henckel) in multiple sizes, and a nasal cartilage knife with a revolving blade for refined shaping. Retractors and specula, including Aufricht nasal retractors and a full range of St Clair Thompson and Thudichum nasal specula, offer excellent exposure of the nasal cavity. For haemostasis and suturing, there is a tungsten‑carbide Nievert needle holder and fine forceps (such as Tilley dressing forceps and Henckel aural forceps) that enable controlled and precise handling.

All these instruments are supplied in a DIN basket (240 × 250 × 50 mm) for easy organisation, sterilisation, and transport. The set has been compiled to combine practicality, surgical reliability, and flexibility, giving ENT surgical teams a dependable foundation for SMR procedures, while accommodating different surgeon preferences and theatre workflows.
