Repair, Don’t Replace: Rethinking Rigid Endoscope Sustainability, Safety and Value

Healthcare teams are under increasing pressure to manage budgets, meet sustainability targets, and maintain the highest standards of patient safety. In this context, the choice between repairing or replacing rigid endoscopes has become a critical consideration.

At Surgical Holdings, we believe that high-quality, compliant third-party repair is often the most sensible approach – clinically, financially, and environmentally.

Advanced Optical Repair You Can Rely On

Our rigid endoscope repair workshop combines experienced technicians with the latest optical repair technologies, including precision laser welding and modern soldering techniques. All repairs follow recognised best-practice guidance, including the MHRA’s Managing Medical Devices (April 2016), ensuring consistent performance and safety.

Wherever possible, we work to original manufacturer optical specifications, using high-quality compatible components to preserve image quality and scope performance. Manufacturer and CE markings are retained for compliance and traceability. Fibre bundles are built in-house, allowing full re-fibre of endoscopes and greater control over durability and light transmission.

A Repair Process That’s Clear and Straightforward

Our repair process is designed to be simple and transparent. Each endoscope is logged on arrival with full identification details, followed by internal imaging to assess its condition. Optical components are stripped and inspected under the microscope, with damaged parts replaced and original components restored where appropriate.

Every scope is thoroughly tested before return. Customers receive a clear repair quotation for approval, and completed scopes are returned with a detailed technical report and an 18-month guarantee.

Repair vs Replace: Real Savings, Same Standards

Repairing rigid endoscopes can deliver substantial cost savings without compromising safety or reliability. In many cases, repair costs up to 80% less than replacement, helping organisations extend equipment life and better manage budgets.

We provide honest, evidence-based advice based on the condition of each scope. In a recent case study at a hospital in the South West, repairing 163 scopes saved £149,000 compared with OEM repair-replacement options.

Patient Safety and Compliance

Patient safety underpins every repair. All components meet implant-level traceability standards and are supported by detailed technical documentation to demonstrate compliance.

As both a manufacturer and repair provider, our technicians bring a deep understanding of rigid endoscope design and performance, supported by rigorous training and decades of hands-on experience.

Supporting Efficiency and Sustainability

To help teams work more efficiently, we offer digital tools for repair tracking and trend analysis, automated testing and monitoring systems, and maintenance services for light leads and scope baskets. We also provide CPD training to support correct handling and basic maintenance.

Repairing rather than replacing rigid endoscopes delivers clear environmental benefits. Refurbishing surgical instruments can reduce carbon emissions by up to 95% compared to manufacturing new devices, supporting progress towards NHS Net Zero targets and more sustainable procurement.

Is Your Endoscope Fit for Use?

Signs such as damage to the tip, cracked or clouded windows, reduced light output, or image distortion can indicate that repair is needed. When there is any doubt about suitability for use, choosing repair over replacement can be both cost-effective and environmentally responsible. All major brands of rigid endoscope can be repaired at our Southend-on-Sea workshop, supported by experienced technicians, advanced optical capability, and a robust quality management system.
