State-of-the-Art Repair Solutions Supporting Greater Healthcare Sustainability Showcased at Medica 2022
Surgical Holdings – an award-winning British manufacturer and repairer of medical devices – will be joining the ABHI UK Pavilion at MEDICA 2022 to showcase how hospitals can manage and care for their surgical instruments in a sustainable and cost-effective way.
Global steel waste remains a huge problem in healthcare. Currently, most surgical instruments – made of surgical-grade stainless steel – end up in landfill and remain there, causing detrimental impacts on the environment. Research shows that it requires 50% less energy to refurbish a surgical instrument than to replace it.
As part of its drive to help hospitals worldwide cut their carbon footprint, Surgical Holdings have introduced an expert Smart Repair service covering a range of surgical instruments, including rigid endoscopes and orthopaedic power tools. Using the latest optical technology, the company repairs scopes back to the manufacturer’s specification, with all parts having full traceability and compliance with regulations. The company also manufactures complicated fibre bundles for endoscopes in-house, using high-quality German fibre optic material and stainless steel tubing.
As well as showcasing their state-of-art surgical device repair solutions at this year’s Medica, the UK manufacturer will also be displaying their range of sterile-packed Kirschner Wires. In the UK and around Europe, hospitals are now also opting to buy their Kirschner wires (K-wires) sterile packed, with a view to boosting hygiene and patient safety.

The Circular Economy faces a growing interest around the globe – and the significant environmental footprint of healthcare continues to present a pressing issue. According to the non-profit organisation Health Care Without Harm, if healthcare were a country, it would be the fifth-largest emitter of greenhouse gases on the planet.
However, it’s recognised that the majority of discarded surgical instruments and stainless-steel medical waste contain valuable materials that can be reused. Studies show that repairing surgical instruments rather than replacing them can help hospitals reduce environmental and financial costs.
To help customers streamline the repair process, Surgical Holdings have introduced SURGIFIX – an online surgical instrument repair portal which allows the repair process to be managed remotely. Originally designed for use by UK hospitals, the system has been adapted to be a valuable business tool for its export partners in Europe and beyond.
MEDICA is taking place from 14 – 17 November 2022 and throughout the show, Surgical Holdings will be located on the ABHI UK Pavilion – Hall 16 Stand J48, where they will be demonstrating their ground-breaking repair service and SURGIFIX platform.
