Visit Surgical Holdings at BritSpine 2023

We are looking forward to attending BritSpine2023 at the SEC Centre in Glasgow this month, 18-20 April, where we’ll be showcasing our impressive range of high-quality, German-manufactured instruments for spinal surgery.

The 3-day event will bring together experts in spinal conditions, research and treatment from across the world. Throughout the event, our team will be on hand to demonstrate our portfolio of top-quality instruments featuring cutting-edge designs to maximise performance and improve lifespan.

Spotlight on spinal surgery instruments

Operating rooms are notorious for being a massive source of greenhouse gas production – accounting for a quarter of the emissions from a typical trust. Reducing those emissions is critical to help the NHS meet its climate targets. An important feat, considering it’s responsible for 20 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, over half of which is linked to procured goods.

Established in 1988, and today renowned as a credible, family-run business, Surgical Holdings is a circular economy focussed manufacturer, distributor and repairer of high-quality Surgical Instrumentation. One key issue they are helping operating teams overcome is the maintenance and repair of their instruments, which they handle meticulously from their manufacturing facility in Southend-on-Sea.
With a UK-based team of over twenty specialist medical device technicians on hand, Surgical Holdings can save hospitals the costs and time of having to ship instruments overseas for repair and maintenance.
Specialist spinal instruments

Surgical Holdings’ impressive portfolio features the McCulloch spinal retractor system, manufactured in Germany. Spinal retractor systems are an important tool for spinal surgeons, helping provide clear access to the surgical site while minimising trauma to the surrounding tissues. The McCulloch spinal retractor systems are designed with many unique features to optimise performance; they have been specifically engineered to allow maximum exposure to the disc whilst using the minimum size incision. The device is specialised for Lumbar Microdiscectomy and is supplied as a full set, which is complete with a wide range of interchangeable blades and two retractor frames. The set is also suitable for high BMI patients featuring blades up to 120mm depth as well as a longer rack for wide incisions.

The Black Belt retractor system is one of the most versatile and widely used retractors for anterior and posterior cervical surgery. The flexibility of the retractor allows it to achieve the smallest incision with optimal access to the cervical spine. The cervical retractor system is designed for anterior and posterior cervical surgery and offers optimal exposure. With products available in titanium and stainless steel, the blades are Ti ALN coated with black finish.

In addition to their neurosurgery and spinal instruments, Surgical Holdings also offer an unrivalled portfolio of Kerrison Rongeurs. The challenges of performing precise and complex procedures with dull Kerrisons are also well known among orthopaedic spine surgeons worldwide. The Kerrison Rongeurs are available with a Black Ceramic coating for enhanced performance and friction reduction to improve lifespan.

As well as helping hospitals go green, Surgical Holdings is also focused on helping operating theatre teams ensure patient safety. ‘Take apart’ hinged Kerrison Rongeurs are designed to allow for thorough cleaning and decontamination, to prevent risks of cross-infection. The device offers a convenient hinge design that opens easily for cleaning, inspection and lubrication while eliminating the risk of misplacing pieces during processing. The Tontarra Cleanwave Kerrison Rongeur also offers a unique perspective on decontamination, with it’s integrated wave design in the instrument shaft, facilitating easy clean, with a rongeur that does not need to be taken apart. Turning attention to performance, the range also features the innovative Symmetry Sharp Kerrison, designed to support surgeons with reliable cutting results without the continuous need for repairs and the logistics. It’s available with a single-use or alternatively reusable tip which attaches to a reusable handle to ensure the highest possible accuracy and safety.
